SCIENCE-OSCARS--__-FINALISTS

Finalists for the ‘Science Oscars’ of South Africa announced – 2018/2019 NSTF-South32 Awards

Adjudication by an independent panel of adjudicators have decided on the finalists for the 2018/2019 NSTF-South32 Awards. The announcement of the winners will be made at the 21st NSTF Awards Gala Dinner on 27 June 2019 in Gauteng with the Minister of Science and Technology.

A finalist is a nominee who, in the opinion of the adjudication panel, is considered eligible for the award. This means that the finalist has made a significantly outstanding contribution to science, engineering, technology (SET) and innovation in South Africa and qualifies to be considered as a potential winner.

About the awards:

The NSTF-South32 Awards, also known as the ‘Science Oscars of South Africa’ is the flagship project of the National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF). These are annual national awards that honour and celebrate outstanding contributions to SET and innovation.

These awards are unique in South Africa:

  • They were the first science awards in South Africa.
  • They are the largest, most comprehensive, and most sought-after national awards of their kind in the country.
  • They are the only science awards that are open, where the public can nominate candidates.
  • The awards process and gala dinner event are collaborative.
  • The awards recognise a variety of outstanding contributions by individuals and teams. These include all practicing scientists, and other professionals across the system of innovation.
  • Youth outreach is an integral part of the awards project. Top performing learners with 90% and above in mathematics and science in Grade 12 are recognised every year through the Brilliants Programme for our future innovators. There is also a year-long series of interactions with students and learners by Award Winners across the country. This is called the NSTF Share ‘n Dare Programme.
